In a couple of hours I’ll be shooting my first wedding for 2007. I’ve made some mental notes of what I’ll be thinking and doing throughout the event. I thought I’d share those for the benefit of others.
Tell the story in a variety of ways using the following methods:
- Don’t skip the details
- Look for different angles
- Pay attention to light
- Look for leading lines
- Shoot wide
- Shoot close
- Frame with foreground objects
- Try different crops
- Shoot down low
- Shoot up high
Most of these are basic. Weddings happen at lighting fast speed though and sometimes the basic things are overlooked. It’s important to not get stuck shooting an event the exact same way and from the same point-of-view. Stick to your style but mix it up.
How was your Christmas? Here are some snapshots from ours.

I hung out with the Kruger family last Saturday. It was a little cold but we managed. This little guy is going to be the next Jacques Cousteau. He knows everything about sharks.
